Mounted Creature Head
After watching the first season of Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge I became very inspired to create a large creature sculpture. The idea is to create a realistic creature that looks as though it has been slain and mounted as a trophy. I started with a large scale sketch of the creature based on one of my favorite creature sketches I did awhile back. (Image above)
Small study done in Roma Plastilina
After I sculpted the maquette I moved on to do a full scale drawing based on the model using a ratio of 1"- 9" So for every inch measured on the maquette I would measure 9 inches on the large scale drawing.
These eyes where casted in clear resin inside half of a ping pong ball, painted then suspended in resin again to give it a clear membrane layer and finally painted with a clear coat of nail polish to give it a shine.
Cut foam base with some simple wet clay to smooth out and roughly detail before adding the epoxy compound (Fix-it Sculpt)
Without tongue or side horns.
After finishing the sculpt I mounded it onto its Oak trophy mount that I custom built for the piece to get a feel for placement and color.
